How is 3D printing advancing hypersonic flight? Announced during Farnborough International Airshow 2022, HVX is a reusable Mach 5-plus program undertaken by Rolls-Royce, the UK government’s Defence Science and Technologies Lab (DSTL), the RAF’s Rapid Capabilities Office, and Reaction Engines. The HVX program combines Rolls-Royce’s jet engine experience with heat exchanger technology developed by Reaction Engines. Additive Manufacturing, aka industrial 3D Printing, is an enabling technology. In this video, Reaction Engines’ rocket scientists Dr. Robert Bond, Head of Future Programmes, and Dr. Emma Ryan, Product Industrialisation Lead, explain more about the SABRE engine and the HVX project.

Michael Petch is the editor-in-chief at 3DPI and the author of several books on 3D printing. He is a regular keynote speaker at technology conferences where he has delivered presentations such as 3D printing with graphene and ceramics and the use of technology to enhance food security. Michael is most interested in the science behind emerging technology and the accompanying economic and social implications.
